It has been an interesting spring semester for those who follow higher education closely and think about colleges located in smaller towns and rural areas. So, two reports on plans for new arts centers at Hastings College in Hastings, Nebraska and Tabor College in Hillsboro, Kansas caught my attention this week. Supporters of both institutions with their long and rich histories are taking significant steps to better serve students and their communities.
Hastings College is proceeding with preparation for building the Jackson Dinsdale Art Center. Hastings enrolls over 1,100 students and is located in a town of just over 25,000 population. Hastings was founded in 1882 and is affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (USA).
At Tabor, a large crowd participated in the groundbreaking for the Shari Flaming Center for the Arts. Tabor College was founded in 1908 by members of the Mennonite Brethren. The institution's enrollment is over 700 students and it is located in a town of just over 6,000 population.
