Deborah Obalil, president of the Association of Independent Colleges of Art & Design (AICAD) authored a post, "Art School of the Future...Exists Now," on Linkedin Pulse today highlighting the significant changes occurring in art schools. Schools are placing more emphasis on life skills as they provide opportunities for their students to learn business skills. She sites programs in entrepreneurship, financial literacy, marketing, management, and intellectual property law.
Obalil notes that another post, "The Art School of the Future," written by Ruby Lerner, founding president and executive director of Creative Capital, issues a similar call for the types of experiences now available for students at many AICAD institutions.
AICAD is a consortium of 42 schools of art and design in the U.S. and Canada. Many of the member institutions are small as reflected by mean enrollment of 1,211 students and a median enrollment of 679 students. They range in size from Cranbook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan with 156 students to Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York with enrollment of 4,690 students.
