Many small colleges look for ways to attract people in the summer and make use of facilities that are underutilized outside the traditional academic year. It is an added bonus when the summer camps attract young people who may be undergraduates in the future.
Stephens College in Columbia, MO offers several interesting options in summer camps that fit nicely with the institution's historic mission as a women's college.
This past week Stephens hosted a Fashion Makers Camp where participants learned to create and make wearable do-it-yourself (DIY) projects. Molly Nagel, reported on the camp for the Columbia Missourian in "Fashion Makers Camp teaches girls about fashion design, history and production."
One of the students woke each morning by 5 a.m. in order to drive with her mother for several hours to attend the camp. The article notes that "...she has always wanted to be a fashion designer and has dreamed of going to school at Stephens for the past four years. When she heard about the Fashion Makers Camp, she begged her mom for weeks to let her attend."
The CoMo Girls Rock! camp is another interesting idea where participants learn an instrument, start a band and write an original song. The camp culminates on a Saturday with a live rock show at a popular local music venue, The Blue Note, where performances of campers’ original songs are featured. You can visit the Stephens College website for other camps offered this summer.
