The Boston Globe published a good article, "Higher education struggles are hitting Vermont hard," on January 31, 2019 with reporting by Laura Krantz.
Krantz interviewed a number of higher education professionals from both the non-profit and public sectors to present an excellent, if sobering, overview of what various institutions in the state are facing.
A lot of emphasis is placed on the nature of Vermont's system of higher education that was largely built in the 19th century and includes a relatively large number of institutions. Krantz also describes in some detail how other states may yet face Vermont's problem with declining numbers of traditional students due to basic demographic issues arising from a low fertility rates.
